How we do it? - A brief introduction to GTD mixes

Dear listeners from far and wide,

Though we're already nearly 20 GTD mixes strong, we haven't yet shared you the details on how our mixes are done, except from the basic facts that they: 1) are 100 % from original vinyl; 2) are recorded without Serato or equivalent; 3) include no post-editing with software; and 4) are recorded on one take. Only excepts to these "rules" are our modern funk mixes, i.e. the volumes 14 and 18, which contain post-editing as the whole one hour mixes are parsed together from three shorter live mixed sets.

Here is a small desciption on how the collaborative GTD mixes are usually done. As we currently live at different cities, the mixes are recorded when we hook-up for a GTD DJ's gig or just visit each other. A typical GTD mix session contains loads of records, some beers, a bottle of whisky or gin and several hours of listening to new records while chatting about music, records and life in general... plus a bit more about records. The contents of the mix are mostly determined by the record bag of the travelling person. After the initial session of going through some of our current favourite 12"s, we decide roughly what to include in the mix. Then, we do a back-to-back build-up for the set and select the tracklist in agreement. Finally, the mix is recorded in one take, except if we happen to fuck up one of the first, say three, blends, which strangely seem to be quite hard to nail. The live feel is transferred to the recording by gradually getting more hyped about the mix and sometimes increasingly tipsy towards the end.

It's fun to do mixes together, but we're both too busy to be able to do it as often as we should and therefore there are more individual GTD DJ mixes than mixes we've done toghether. However, a new mix is on the planning board and except more wobbly beats and modern funk appear this way quite soonish. And stay tuned for more Give It Back-mixes and a new "jubilee" 20th GTD mix!

It Was A Phonour - Quest house mix by Juho Kahilainen

We're lucky to get a such a fine contribution from our fellow technohead Juho Kahilainen who dug deep into his shelves for some lost house records. Inspired by Tevo Howard's latest amazing album "Pandora's Box", Juho's mix features deep tracks in similar vein by the great Mr. Fingers aka Disco D, a wonderful remix of John Beltran by Kassem Mosse and a whole lot of stuff I've never even heard of. The mix is all the way deep, but danceable.

Together with Juho, we started a monthly club night devoted to house music called Phonour at Domino (later Blaze) in Jyväskylä back in 2003. The first night was a blast and featured a guest DJ, Jori Hulkkonen, who later returned once a year to play at Phonour until we had to pack our record bags, finish our studies, start working full time and head to Helsinki in 2007. Apostoli joined the crew along the way in 2005, widening the soundspectrum further towards hiphop and disco. From 2008 on, we've had a chance to house-sit the decks at mbar in Helsinki every month. Now, it's time to put Phonour to end or on a hiatus at least. Juho will concentrate more on his own productions and GTD DJs will be hosting a new club night soonish. And yeah, we'll all still keep playing house music.

‘Morphology’, a new collaboration from Finland consisting of Michael Diekmann who records under the alias CRC and Matti Turunen otherwise known as Näköradiomies. Morphology fuses early electro sounds with haunting melodies to create a deep blend of atmospheric future funk.

Morphology have released their debut album Urania's Mirror on Zyntax Motorcity and various 12" on different labels such as Abstract Forms, Semantica and diametric. They are extremely good live as can be seen from this clip from Kotimaan Teknokatsaus Pt. 2, an yearly event hosted by Samuli Kemppi which showcases Finnish techno and electro live artists.

Gimme The Dance DJs are deeply honoured to be playing at Movement next Friday 25th of February held at Jenny Woo! Movement is a monthly dance event created by dancers for dancers, as they say. "It's a party for people who enjoy variety of soulful dance music, afro, soul, disco, boogie, hip-hop and house." Sounds like perfect match for us! Last time I visited the party, I was astonished by the overall vibe and especially the dance-battle (was house 1 vs. 1) was pretty amazing. So, I strongly encourage you all to join to see some eye-popping moves and of course do some dancing yourself!

In the midst of the coldest winter, keeping your body in good shape requires a daily dosage of healthy vitamins. But your soul requires them too, you know. Here is a new mix by Jacedonia sizzling with that vitamin H (house music) and perfect for that purpose - it wakes you up and starts your day like juice from freshly squeezed oranges.

The mix includes some of my very recent favourites put together with some classics from the last few years. This is roughly the sound you can hear at Phonour, a monthly music night dedicated to house music run together with Juho Kahilainen. The mix features tracks by Reggie Dokes, Iron Curtain, NWAQ, Kyle Hall, Jus Ed, etc. For the complete tracklist, check the notes below.

Jacedonia - Freshly Squeezed (Gimme The Dance Mix Vol. 15)

Jacedonia's freshly squeezed orange juice:
- 3 slightly cooled sweet oranges
- ice cubes

First roll the oranges a bit on a table to make them softer and easier to squeeze. Then, cut them in half with a sharp knife. Squeeze the oranges with a juice squeezer or with your bare hands over a glass, if you don't have one. Add some of the pulp from the oranges with a spoon. Drop in some ice cubes, put this mix on, enjoy the drink and relax.

Synth, Crackle & Nod: Gimme The Dance Mix Vol. 14 features Modern Funk & Hip Hop from the last decade!

You all know how we're all about that good boogie, disco, house and electro funk. Well, we've always been big fans of Hip Hop and Rap as well. During the last couple of years the blooming of warping beats and spacy synth sounds of L.A. Modern Funk has brought something new to the scene and we have felt that it finally seals the seemingly big gap (all of you real music/record diggers out there know there has never been one, but anyways...) between the hardcore HipHop heads and Disco fanatics.

These sounds have really hit us like a tidal wave and as it had been over a year since we last recorded a mix together, we decided to reserve one Saturday evening for mixing with gin & juice.

Starting off from deep and spaced out tracks from Pavel Dovgal, Busy and Arp 101 this mix takes a step on the dark side with Nosaj Thing, Hermutt Lobby and Dizz1. To uplift the spirit, the journey continues with the banging beats of Onra and synth-solos of Dâm-Funk. There's something wrong with you if you don't see the palm trees swinging by the sides of pavements when B. Bravo's Computa Love finishes the mix.

Finally! Naks Pulls Out The First Italo Disco Mix on GTD

We've been waiting to publish an italo disco mix for quite some time already and finally our guy Naks agreed in recording a mix of his new italo records for us. Us GTD DJs go way back with Naks as he used hang out at the same neighborhoods and play records at the same parties, but nowadays he can be found crate digging in Berlin record shops and fleamarkets.

Besides the fact that he keeps getting these vinyl filled pizza boxes from Italy, Naks loves to play electro disco and electro (the real kind, if you catch my drift) as well. His severe music addiction is beyond cure and from his ever growing collection of disco maxis comes this selection of classics. Needn't say we're immensely grateful for his contribution. We got sick and tired of that zShare bullshit and got ourselves a SoundCloud account. This should be way more convenient not only for us but even more so to all of you listeners. So, if you didn't bother to listen to our mixes previously due the inconvenience of zShare, you can find all the Gimme The Dance mixes at http://soundcloud.com/gimme-the-dance.

Unfortunately "Give It Back" mixes are not on SoundCloud (at least not yet) and the older ones will be removed when new ones are added. "I'm gonna take this music and use it as my therapy"

Those who know me, know that I've been going through some pretty rough changes in my life and it hasn't been easy. Lets face it, I'm not much of a poet, writer or composer and I sure as hell can't draw or paint. The only thing I can do, is to interpret my feelings by playing other people's music. Pretty pathetic isn't it.

Most of you hardcore house fanatics out there will probably find no surprises in this mix and some of the tracks might even be pretty obvious and cheesy. Well, the songs have personal meaning to me and they are something I can relate to. This house is most definitely for the broken hearted.

I wish to dedicate this mix... to myself! Yes, now it's time for me to take the extra step and pull my head out of the mire of longing, saddness and jealousy, and welcome the days to come with an open heart ready to love again some day.

We're on a constant quest for better and better DJ-mixes, so if you have the skills and some dope boogie, disco, soul, house or freestyle records, send us your best take (dj_apostoli(ä)hotmail.com) and it might end up as one of our Quest mixes! The two conditions we have are that (1) the recording has got to be live (meaning no computer mixing) and (2) the music has got to be played from original records (none of that Serato-stuff with downloaded mp3s). This way we wish not only to keep our sound clear but also show some respect to original djing techniques and culture with real records dug up from crates.
